Our European clients appreciated the clean, sleek lines of their residence abroad, so they wanted their new Florida vacation home to feel the same. They also wanted their vacation home to be very comfortable to accommodate their quiet lifestyle and privacy was also a main concern.

Challenge

Solution

From the roadside, this appears to be an attractive contemporary residence that avoids an ultra-modern aesthetic. Its hipped roof and generous overhangs add a touch of softness to the otherwise sleek modern design. Despite the waterfront location extending from the street to the beach, the house fully utilizes its available building space.

Since the public living spaces are situated on the second floor, offering captivating vistas of the beach and water, privacy was less of a concern. AJO decided on expansive windows and sliding glass doors to embrace panoramic water views, abundant natural light, and refreshing breezes.

The living areas extend outside onto porches, gardens, and breezeways, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor space.

This beachfront home is fundamentally an AJO “Tropical Modern” residence and differs from traditional design by incorporating clean lines and elegant minimal details. These unadorned details are made richer, inside and out, by combining sensuous local materials with metal, white surfaces,  colored glass, and rich wood.

Ventilation and views are key characteristics of AJO’s tropical modern design. Seen here at our award-winning Villa Captiva, strategically located windows and large sliding doors facilitate ventilation while providing transparency, views, and daylight.

The windows situated at the rear of the custom stairway present a picturesque tropical scene as oak steps lead to the top floors. Accompanying the stairway, thick glass panels elegantly ascend, ensuring ample natural light throughout the space.

In the Master Suite, light emanates from rectangular fixtures positioned around the perimeter of the ceiling. This distinctive lighting approach reflects AJO’s preference for allowing light to bounce off the walls rather than pool on the floor.

It doesn’t matter where you look when you are in this house, you know you’re in the tropics.

The desire for a quiet sanctuary with natural light and expansive views of the Gulf of Mexico sparked the architect’s creative design process and thoughtful detailing. In the Villa Captiva, interiors, art, and architecture fold in and out, back and forth. The intertwining spaces, furnishings, features, fixtures, sound, and texture blend into the very essence of Home.
