The clients were deadlocked in which style they wanted to build their new Sanibel house: She wanted a British Colonial look while he wanted a Coastal Modern home.

Solution

Compromise is key. AJO listened attentively to the clients' preferences, crafting a home that seamlessly merges both styles.

The front of the two-story single-family home revels a British Colonial aesthetic, featuring blue window shutters and ornate porch railings, while the beach view of the home boasts a modern look with floor-to-ceiling glass panels. The lavish landscaping and vegetation, including an orchid wall, seamlessly unify these contrasting designs.

The inside of the home optimizes with an island life modern vibe of light hues, abundant natural light, and extensive use of glass.

Oak flooring throughout and bleached oak on the ceilings, along with hints of blues keeps the home light and tropical. The stunning warm-wood floating staircase, complete with skylights and windows, floods the center of the home with natural light.

Off the kitchen is a three-sided screened outdoor living space that offers not only picturesque views of the Gulf of Mexico and pool, but also invites the gentle breeze in.

An extra touch added to this home is the open-wall concept evident in the master suite. In this section of the home, instead of doors, perpendicular partial walls offer unobstructed views of the Gulf through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Joyce explains, “The spaces are very modern (in) how they flow into one another. It was really all about the light and space and the simple transition between rooms without blocking them with doors. It’s just very open and bright. I tried really hard (to ensure that) even though the home is traditional from the front, there is still plenty of light coming into the middle of the house as well as from the Gulf side.”

With a little creativity, AJO was able to present an exquisite, spacious, and luminous residence that exceeded the clients' expectations and aspirations.

With its large swaths of glass, the house opens itself to the beach with its stunning views outward being at the forefront of its charming features. The sky and the ocean reflect themselves in the windows, blending the house into its surroundings by day, but transforming into a glowing crystal palace by night.
