AIA: Skyler joined our team in October 2024; a Florida native, Skyler was born and raised in Fort Myers before earning a five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Miami, with minors in Art and Urban Studies. Her education emphasized adaptive and forward-thinking solutions for coastal and climate-vulnerable regions like South Florida. Skyler expanded her architectural perspective through a study abroad program in Rome and later lived in Venice, Italy, working as an architectural designer while collaborating remotely with an architect on Sanibel Island. "The fact that AJO offers architectural and interior design services means Owens and her team have the ability to make encounters with their spaces seamlessly expressive, and these are even more impactful when there are water views. "Waterfront sites in particular are incredible opportunities," she says. "But they also bring challenges. I have spent so much of my career thinking about climate and the concepts developed by architects like Paul Rudolph-overhangs to shade interiors and making sure there is cross-ventilation, for instance." She cites Bauhaus architecture and the work of Carlo Scarpa as compelling. "These have been influences for me, but only to a point," she notes.
